Dysart

At an unremarkable 5'10, Armend Dysart maintains a constant human projection. After spending a good month as a hologram he'd crafted an opportunity that few others share- making your own appearance.

Cryoboy Interview

Added : 19th March 2009

David VDB aka "Cryoboy" first joined Blue Dwarf with the character Andy Roos, who died last year to save us all from the Krylons. Now he has two characters, Armend Dysart: an artificial lifeform, and the mysterious "Potential" a time-travelling being working in the 'Information and Parallel dimensions Section' of the 'Agency'.

Q. How long have you been a member of Blue Dwarf now?

Cryoboy- In comparison to the other members I've actually one of the newest 'regulars'. According to the posting record I've been around since the 26th of July, 2007. Meaning that I've been here for nearly 2 years now. Nothing really compared to say, Andy Longman, Andy Jones or Rebecca.

Q. You killed off your character Andy Roos last year to save everyone else, was this something you'd been planning for a while?

Cryoboy- Well, yes and no. I had planned his death quite thoroughly before going through with it. I hadn't planned to kill him off, say, when I just started. The Krylon arch was starting to drag on at that point and someone had to get up and do something. I know that Andy, not matter how good he was, couldn't stop this threat single-handedly without God-modding him. So some kind of sacrifice had to be made.

As for killing him I did have other motives. Although I'd really have liked to have him find someone on the ship so he'd stop being so mopey but I knew that wasn't going to happen.

Believe it or not, I actually decided to fully go through with it when Lester joined the group. I realised that I had lost sight of who Andy Roos was actually meant to be. A fun, funny character. So I decided for him to at least end his life by choosing to defeat his demons then simply wasting away on the backburners into oblivion.

Well, considering how no one know how he really died he may or may not have done that anyway.

Q. Your recurring time-travelling character “Potential” is quite mysterious, can you explain why he keeps popping up and who he is working for?

Cryoboy- I first made up Potential as a 'Q' type character to pull Andy and Efof out of each other's minds. However when Annie started to show, I thought 'why not?' and threw him back in for a cameo. I didn't expect Onion's reaction to him so I tried not to embed him into the story but, well, he did anyway and now he's just meddling to get his jollies.

As his job as being part of the 'Information and Parallel dimensions Section' of the 'Agency' (an early warning team of sorts) he's actually not allowed to own or govern a dimension as that would take too much time away. Instead Potential leaches off the spontaneous energy from Annie's dimension. Although he's meant to keep a 'hands off' approach, he's far too meddlesome to keep away and often sets things up behind the scenes to amuse himself.

Q. You recently hinted that Potential's real name is “Euodias”, and that he probably isn't who his co-worker Annie thinks he is. Can you give us any more clues to his origin?

Cryoboy- 'Euodias' is fully Agent, unlike Annie who is half-human and therefore capable of dying. Since no-one but Onion knows where the Agents come from I decided to think of it later when he reveals more about the Agents. Sufficed to say, Potential is no longer immortal and the only way to lose immortality is to trade it for something of equal value...

Q. Annie and Potential are two time-travelling beings working for similar goals but with different methods, will we see more of them in the future? And could we see their relationship develop at all?

Cryoboy- I wanted to keep the two of them out of the limelight for two reasons. 1) They're not Blue Dwarf members, no one can really interact with them. 2) Any enemies they have would have to be equally powerful, so nothing that the Blue Dwarf would fight on a regular basis.
I do have plans for Potential's and Annie's Teacher/student and budding romantic relationship, but it'll write it as it happens. Anything can go wrong in this universe after all.

Q. In March of 2008, Potential “encouraged” Andy Roos to shoot Captain Calvert. This was a bold move that caused a lot of changes to happen. What made you write this?

Cryoboy- Like your second question, I felt that arch was dragging on too long. Also, Andy didn't really like Calvert but he wasn't a murder- at least he didn't think so- so 'Potential' gave him a reason by wiping out his personal nano-skutters. Meta-gaming wise also freed me of the blasted things.

Potential reasoning for having Andy kill him was three fold. 1) Annie, in an attempt to save the Dwarf, was trying to stop him using reasoning alone but Potential knows that sometimes you just have to take out the middleman. 2) Waxing Calvert would prevent Andy from being killed as soon as the Captain took over the ship. 3) He had Andy kill him to hopefully soften the blow of his later revelation of what really happened to his orphanage. Yeah, that one didn't work.

Q. Your most recent character “Armend Dysart” is an extension of the personality of Andy Roos, could you explain how that came about? And why you didn't just start afresh with a new character?

Cryoboy- Armend Dysart is quite simply a self-made man. When Andy Roos died I actually felt that I wanted to keep writing him, but I also didn't want any of his 'serious' physiological issues. With this in mind I also found the concept intriguing. Imagine that you're a hacker and your own body is the program. How would you change it? What would you look like?

I knew that Andy, especially after he remembered all of his life, would have a heavy amount of self-loathing and he does. Armend Dysart hates Andy Roos. Should the two were to walk by each other in a hall way, Dysart would most likely try to kill him.

Still, if I've succeeded in creating an interesting character is really up to others to decide.

Q. Have you got any hints about what is going to happen to Dysart in the near future at all? :-P

Cryoboy- What happens to Dysart is merely whatever is on the cards, but right now he has two goals. 1) To improve his body. 2) To evade the JMC. 3) To get his f$%#ing legs back!!
