Seymour's path to Captaincy

Look how different things used to be, Seymour was a sensible, enthusiastic Commander, second to the wild Captain Will D Cannon.
Captain Cannon lost his family to a Gelf attack, and gradually became more and more distant from the crew. His command decisions were questionable, and his first officer Seymour Niples was the one left cleaning up his mess half of the time. In the popular hallucination plot (where a virus onboard the Blue Dwarf causes your hallucinations to become reality) Captain Cannon's anger manifested into a large monster that killed several player characters.
In this post (posted February 2004), the volatile Captain Cannon asks why Seymour is trying to have him removed as Captain.

A courtroom tribunal proceeds, where Commander Niples has to give evidence against his Captain, risking his entire career. Seymour can't help but imagine what it would be like to be promoted to Captain, and enjoys the thought very much!

Seymour Niples' dream is shattered when Captain Cannon is allowed to remain in command of the Blue Dwarf. Seymour is angry when he realises Cannon has many high-up connections.
The next mission assigned to the Blue Dwarf takes them to Argus Prime, a planet plagued by a race of Gelfs, the same gelfs that killed Cannon's family. Their mission is to negotiate, but Captain Cannon grins as a Missile launcher is fitted to the Blue Dwarf.

Captain Cannon wants to destroy as many of the gelfs as possible, still blaming them for the deaths of his family, whilst Commander Niples urges him for a peaceful solution. Commander Niples can't stop Cannon from doing something stupid...

Dazed and confused, Seymour Niples wakes up in the medibay to be called "Captain" for the first time.

A short time after the death of Captain Cannon, acting-Captain Seymour Niples has to tell the brass what happened. As the logical choice, Seymour gets promoted to the rank of Captain, but he has to choose his first officer.
