Physical Appearance
Jed is a tall lanky man who is a lot stronger and tougher than he looks. Although he lacks large rippling muscles, Jed makes up for it with his air of crazed unpredictability. He has been known to fight hand to hand with men twice his strength but win out of sheer dastardliness.
He has a wizened face that makes him appear a lot older than his years, which also gives him the rough look of a man who has been living in the wilderness for years. He shaves less than he washes, every ice age.
Despite his position of Captain on the Blue Dwarf, Jed was always seen in a scruffy leather overcoat, ragged flannel shirts and a cowboy hat. He has a constant grimaced face that makes it impossible to tell whether he is in a good mood or not, if he is you’ll get a friendly slap on the back, if not you’ll get a slap in the face. With a knife.
Jed can always be seen with his hand laser-pistols, which he carries in two side gun holsters. He is rumoured to even wear these guns to bed and sleep with a pistol under his pillow. This is not true, under his pillow he has a loaded shotgun.
Jed appears to be constantly drunk. His skin is an unhealthy shade of grey, which seems to turn to green if he hasn't had a drink in a while.
Personality and Interests
Jed Calvert has been known to grind his coffee with his teeth and boil the water with his own rage. When Jed is in a bad mood, everyone on the ship will be warned to never go near him on fear of death.
Coming from the harsh dessert planet of New Texas, Jed has developed a thick skin in his attitude to people, and isn't much of a people person. He has developed the personality of a cowboy on the old Western Frontier, tough, wild and unpredictable. He speaks in an old fashioned cowboy slang and in his spare time relaxes on an electronic rodeo horse.
It is far to say that Jed has a take-no-shit attitude to being a starship captain. He is very strong willed and in negotiations with aliens or other space dwellers, there are NO negotiations.
Jed Calvert does not go hunting, Jed Calvert goes KILLING. He is not afraid to get down and dirty on away missions, normally hoping to kill as many people as possible.
Jed takes care of his own, this includes his crew and people he likes, but ultimately he is a selfish individual out for himself. He is always looking for a quick buck and searching for any dodgy deal or trade he can get to better himself. He has a long history of trading with nefarious characters, with no morals about what he trades, and doesn’t care who he screws over to get what he wants.
Above all, Jed likes to have a good life. He likes a good ol’ thigh-slapping hootenanny where he will drink more moonshine or liquor as humanely possible. He is never one to hold back, especially in conversations when he will confidently speak his mind, no matter the consequences.
History
Early life
Jed grew up on the planet of New Texas. From here on his history is vague, as he has been known to tell a million stories about his life, and all of them are questionably true.
From a young age, it was clear that Jedidiah Calvert was a good man and would make a good Captain one day. He rose up through the ranks of Space Corps quickly and became first officer of thr SCS York. An incident occured causing the SCS York to crash on a moon, this was where Calvert became infected with a virus that caused him to become half Hymenoptera. This gave him urges to kill, and to eat human flesh, which is something that he later learned to control by turning to alcoholism. The alcohol inhibiting the Hymenoptera genes in his body. It did however loosen his morales, and Calvert reverted to a life of smuggling and corruption until he rejoined the Space Corps, (and some say) bribed his way to Captains position, and then furthered his life of smuggling and corruption - this time doing it on a salary.
There is dispute however to how he became to Captain the JMC Blue Dwarf, as the man is a clear drunk with extremely loose morales, and no care for his own crew. There is a rumour that the order came from the top of the JMC itself, Willy Eckerslike.
Becoming Captain of the Blue Dwarf
The events that lead to Jed becoming Captain of the Blue Dwarf are complicated and involve time travel. It all started when the Earth was destroyed by the Hymenoptera, Jed was Captaining the JMC Fools Gold. Instead of transporting refugees away from Earth, Jed has stocked up on moonshine to sell for a fortune after the Earth was no more. But Jed's crew didn’t like this and rebelled, leaving him alone and naked on a dessert planet. Jed soon found a way off the planet, and took a few odd jobs before finding himself Captaining a ship of refugees from the destroyed Earth, whose wet and inexperienced crew were in desperate need of Jed's no-shit Captains skills. Until Jed again faced mutiny by attempting to use the ship to smuggle some pillaged gold, and found himself fleeing in a very damaged ship that was leaking lethal radiation. A dying Jed Calvert then got rescued by the Blue Dwarf as they were going back in time to save the Earth, allowing Jed to see persuade his past-self not to make the stupid mistakes he had some in the past few weeks. Jed, of course being the stubborn man he was didn’t like being told what to do and killed his future self, although a small amount of conscience did make him change his future.
Instead of fleeing Earth with smuggled moonshine this time, Jed crashed his ship the JMC Fools Gold into the Hymenoptera mothership and met the crew of the Blue Dwarf, aiding them in their mission to destroy it.
Jed was made Captain of the Blue Dwarf a few weeks later, having a personal familiarity of the area of space the Blue Dwarf was being sent to. Jed proved to be a difficult Captain and didn't get on very well with most of the crew. He also appeared to be constantly drunk, which made him make some bad command decisions. Altough he seemed to get more aggressive and eratic if he DIDN'T drink.
Commanding the Blue Dwarf
Captain Calvert has made many decisions that were controvercial with the crew of the Blue Dwarf.
For example, in December 2106 he receives orders for the Blue Dwarf to return to Earth to be re-crewed, and everyone aboard fired. This was not an easy order to follow, but Calvert refused flat out to follow it. Instead he planned to take the Blue Dwarf rogue, and to turn the Blue Dwarf into an intergalatic casino.
Captain Calvert was however shown a dark version future by a mysterious time traveller named "Annie", and says this is what will happen if he refuses to comply to orders and take the Blue Dwarf back to Earth. Jed was still not convinced and refused to surrender to the Space Corps.
The crew mutiny against Jed and call the SpaceCorps ship "Oath-Keeper", which arrives at high speed and crashes into the Blue Dwarf. The crashed ship leaks a high-density unstable gas called cyclosium B into the air of the Blue Dwarf, causing something bizarre to happen to the males of the crew. Their penisses fall off, and try to kill people.
Jed was just about to send a message to the Space Corps for them to finally surrender, when he was shot by Andy Roos.
Calvert's removal from Captain of the Blue Dwarf
A mysterious time-traveller from another dimension named "Potential" and collegue of "Annie" encourages Andy Roos to shoot Jed Calvert. Jed is just about to finally send a message to the Space Corps that he will surrender when Roos shoots him in the Drive Room.
Calvert leaks green blood out of his wound much to everyone's surprise, as no-one had any reason to believe he was anything but Human. At the time nobody suspected that the green blood signified he was half Hymenoptera.
Calvert was taken to a hospital on Titan where he was stabalised, but was later on moved by an ominous pharmacuticals company called TransMed to a TransMed research facility on Earth.
Jed remained at this research facility for several months, where TransMed performed continous experiments on him, researching his half Hymenoptera physiology.
Jed was rescued by Rosette LaChance in December 2108, and they flee the TransMed facility and get back to the Blue Dwarf. Jed hasn't had any alcohol in a long time, and his Hymenoptera side emerges a few times to attack crewmembers.
Jed is caught and put into prison, where Nikki Baines tried to make him drink whiskey to suppress his Hymenoptera urges. Jed refused and broke out of the cell.
TransMed operatives came to the Blue Dwarf on a spaceship and hunted down Jed. As they scanned the ship for Human/Hymenoptera hybrids, they found what they called one at "100%". This was extremely unusual so they decided to pursue this new Hymenthrope, instead of Calvert. Now they didn't need Calvert they shot him with a Blue-Ray laser, turning his body to dust.
