Infinity welcomes careful drivers

Is Mimas the worst place to wake up after a night of heavy drinking?

The Red Dwarf website released an e-shot yesterday to advertise "Infinity welcomes careful drivers" by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor has just been released on iTunes.

The book was originally published in 1989 and is based on the first two series of Red Dwarf. It gives a deeper insight into the characters of Lister and Rimmer, and also gives loads more information about the human race and the galaxy (Hint, might be useful information to know for Blue Dwarf!).

The books are read by Chris Barrie, who is great at doing all the character's voices.

The story

The book begins in 2180 (meaning that the BD's year scheme is 80 years out of date!). Most of the solid planets and moons in the solar system have been colonised. Commercialism is still rife, and most of Earth's natural resources have been depleted. The Jupiter Mining Corporation is one of many companies which mines resources from moons and planets such as Ganymede, Triton and the asteroid belt.

Orbiting Saturn is the Spanish-owned moon of Mimas, a major supply port in the Solar System. This is where the reader is introduced to Lister, who had ended up on Mimas after a binge drinking session in London, and had no idea how he had travelled there.

The story goes on to tell how Lister got onto the JMC Red Dwarf, and introduces the red Dwarf characters we know and love.

So who's going to buy this?

I've not heard these before, so I would really love to have a listen. It's a bit pricey at £8 though, and you only get part 1!

Am I being too tight? I'm only really annoyed because it will be locked to Apple's format, which means I can't play it on my generic mp3 player, or in my car.

Is there anyone here who's heard these before? Review please!

*mumbles something about Torrents*

I've heard them, but nothing beats the books really.

*mumbles into cup of Tea that aren't Torrents great?*

I remember hearing the audio stuff before reading the books. I guess i'll always big up audio books and radio dramas/plays because of my degree, but if it gets people back to listening to the radio then good!

Hehe torrents are great... but if they don't receive the money from flogging this stuff, how are they ever going to receive enough to make that goddam movie? :-P

By this time they should make an animated movie. There just isn't much chance that they'd all get back on stage without something that'd be too weird (like grey hairs and other signs of age).

Animated would be awesome, it solves all the problems with them looking too old, and the problems with them all now having their own tv careers/not having enough time etc, and also they could give it some awesome wicked graphics. I know the awesome wicked graphics aren't important for a comedy, but it helps make it look cool in previews so could get a better audience.

Although please for the love of god don't let it be animated by the in-house BBC special effects team because they've done some horrendous things in Hyperdrive and Dr Who, although some of the Dr Who graphics this series have been okay.
