New Red Dwarf episodes
Added : 20th September 2008
The Red Dwarf team are getting together to record some new episodes for the TV show Dave. Dave is a UK TV channel that recycles old shows, but unlike the millions of channels that do this already, Dave just seems to always have something good on!
So Dave has just commissioned some new Red Dwarf episodes, exciting right? My initial excitement was soon whittled away when I heard it was going to be a "clips" show, making me imagine those horrible episodes of comedy shows where they just show the best bits from other episodes.
Is that really worth putting Robert Lwellyn through those 6 hours of make-up just for that?
But happily since reading this article I'm glad to say that there is going to be at least two fresh episodes, and then the dreaded clip show. But they are being quite tight lipped about this clip show and say it's "Red Dwarf as you have never ever seen before" - what does that mean? Surely it's Red Dwarf EXACTLY as it's been seen before. Unless of course they're doing a clever time-travel plot where they visit previous episodes. Maybe like that episode of DS9 where they digitally add them into the old Captain Kirk episode with the Tribbles!
So that wouldn’t be so bad, every episode of Red Dwarf is almost sacred for me now and revisiting the old scenes with a fresh new twist would be brilliant, as long as they did it cleverly. One scene that springs to mind is the one in “Future Echoes” where Lister first sees an echo of Rimmer saying unusual things to him, and then seeing him again a few minutes later and having the same conversation, making the first conversation make sense. What if the Lister from the future travelled back to this moment and added a third level of complication? Or what if we actually see the other predicted scenes from that episode come true, like the old Lister with the grey hair and robotic hand laying in Lister’s bunk?
When I saw the Robert Llwellyn, Norman Lovett, Chris Barrie, Chloe Anette and Danny John-Jules at the NEC Memorabilia event a few years ago they all mentioned that they would love to do a film, or something, anything to just finish the series off. (Norman especially wanted a film just for royalty rights!) Maybe this is it, maybe this is the final thing that will finish the series off for good! So it wouldn’t be beyond possibility that this is going to be the Red Dwarf crew’s final story, so we might see them grow old and even die.
