Starbug model - competition prize

Story Competition - Winner announced!

Added : 21st April 2009

Hi Everyone, It's time to announce the winner of the Blue Dwarf Novella competition.

I received four very good finished stories. These were:

“Zerstoren” by Mike Bullen

This was a story set on the Blue Dwarf about a security officer named James Torsky (or “Shrub” to his friends). German terrorists attempt to destroy the Blue Dwarf, but security fight them off with the help of a familiar Red Dwarf character.

“Lester's Story” by J Stebbing

This is a story of J's character Lester before he joined the Blue Dwarf. Lester works for the company “Back to Reality”, where their most recent version of the popular Actual-Reality game has developed a fault.

“Dream Land” by James Hogg

On Blue Dwarf's deck 13 there is a secret prison named the “Bucket”. A prisoner named Omar has strange dellusions of cartoon and TV characters coming to life, which blurs the lines between reality and fiction.

“Supernova” by Rebecca Tordoff

In a parallel universe to Red Dwarf, The League of Terran Worlds starship Supernova is Captained by the Cake-obsessed Richard Blacklock encounters an alien called the Combine.

All of the stories have been very good quality, and over the next few days I'll add them to the Blue Dwarf website (www.bluedwarf.co.uk) so that everyone can see.

The story I have chosen to win has been the one which I thought was the most creative. I specified when I first announced this competition that I was looking for something that was “Red Dwarfy”. Which can be interpreted in many different ways. All have differing degrees of funnyness, all have differing degrees of creativeness, and all have differing degrees of science-fiction elements.

The story I have chosen to win has made the best use of the technology set forth in the Red Dwarf universe, it has a novel way of using holograms as a method of communication, and heavily references VR technology from a Red Dwarf episode, also it makes the most references to the word “smeg”.

The winner is......

“Lester's Story” by J Stebbing

Well done J!

Seriously, it was tough because each story was good in different ways and I don't want anyone to be upset that they didn't win.

I chose J's story because he really embraced the idea to make a stand-alone story and used it as a chance to tell some background information about his mysterious character. Grammatically it was very well written, and the characters were strong and consistent. The story was interesting and the pace throughout was good.

This also means that J will win the cool little model Starbug! It's been sat on my desk here for so long that I'll miss it now
:-)
