"I wanted to explore strange new worlds," Smegg grumbled, "and now I end up mining them!"
Actually he wasn't doing the mining, but doing the slightly less strenuous and monotonous work of operating the machinery that turned the raw ore into much-needed supplies. He recalled that once he'd considered how the ship could virtually refit itself like this; he didn't know he'd actually have to do it!
Then some sort of creature that sort of looked like a two-foot-long slug, only it was made of almost red-hot rock, chewed its way out of the ground.
"YOU KILLED OUR BABIESSS!" the monster somehow hissed.

Mining
The Blue Dwarf's original purpose was as a mining ship, to mine ore from planetoids or asteroids, and transport this ore back to the Jupiter Mining Corporation. Because of this purpose, the Blue Dwarf is equipped with a lot of mining machinery, and has an under-used Mining Department.
The Mining Department is made up of dedicated workers and geologists who pass the time by doing small mining operations whenever the Blue Dwarf passes some asteroids with useful ores. The miners will extract the valuable ores and convert it to useful materials to fuel the ship. Often this goes on without any of the crew even knowing about it.
